A participatory event for Arrival: A Paper Boat Project by Kimie Joe
Join artist Kimie Joe (or trained facilitators) for a 60-minute guided participatory art experience connected to Arrival: A Paper Boat Project by Kimie Joe (The Arrival Project), an evolving installation using paper boats to reflect on immigration, journeys, and belonging in the United States.
During this intimate making session, participants will learn how to fold traditional paper boats and create 3–5 boats to contribute to the growing collection. All materials are provided, and no prior experience is needed. We will demonstrate the folding process, and guide the group through a reflective, hands-on experience.
The collected boats will be featured in a public exhibition on August 21, 2026 at Gallery of Hermosa, where the first major installation of Arrival will be unveiled.
This event is perfect for tourists, families, locals, and art lovers looking for a meaningful, hands-on cultural experience in Hermosa Beach. It’s both a creative activity and a chance to directly support a living artwork. Proceeds from the event fund materials, outreach, and the ongoing development of the project, while higher patron levels help expand participation and bring the work to wider communities beyond this initial exhibition.
Feel free to bring your own refreshments to enjoy while you create!
Come fold, reflect, and become part of a growing national artwork - one boat, one story, one journey at a time.
